Day-to-Day Mastery: 5 Organization Tips from a Remote Digital Marketer

The digital age has transformed not only the way we work but also where we work from. The COVID-19 pandemic further pushed the boundaries of this transformation, transitioning many professionals, including digital marketers, to a remote working environment. Among these pioneering remote professionals is Athena Stylli, our esteemed Social Media Manager of MyOnBiz. With over seven years in digital marketing and three years of embracing the remote working lifestyle since the pandemic's onset, Athena has insights for those trying to navigate the remote workspace.

Athena Stylli: A Brief Introduction

Before we delve into her expert tips, let’s understand the professional behind these insights. Athena's journey in digital marketing spans seven years, with the last three focused on navigating the unique challenges and opportunities of remote work. Her role at MyOnBiz has not only allowed her to further her expertise in digital marketing but also to master the art of balancing work and life in a remote setting.

More about her can and her remote work-life balance can be found in our previous blog.

Now, let’s get into it.

Athena's Top 5 Tips to Organise Your Day-to-Day as a Remote Worker

1. Start with Structure:

Every morning, Athena suggests laying out your tasks for the day. Whether it's a digital tool or a good old-fashioned planner, determine your priorities. This roadmap not only provides a clear vision for the day but also offers a sense of accomplishment as you tick off tasks.

Pro tip: Athena herself uses Asana to help her map out all of her tasks - from work and personal.

2. Designate Workspaces:

It’s easy to fall into the trap of working from your couch or bed, but Athena warns against this. Have a specific workspace – even if it’s a small desk in your living room (rather than your dining room table). This physical separation is crucial for mental separation, ensuring you "leave" work at the end of the day.

Once working at home becomes tiring altogether, there are other physical locations you can go to, e.g Coffee shops (check google reviews for their rating + WiFi speed as this is important, and don't forget to take your headphones), or Co-working spaces where like-minded individuals will also be working from (and if you have meetings to do, this may be ideal as they have designated meeting spaces).

3. Schedule Regular Breaks:

Working remotely can sometimes mean plunging deep into tasks and forgetting to take breaks. Athena recommends setting alarms or reminders for short breaks. A quick walk, a few stretches, or even making a cup of tea can rejuvenate your mind.

Usually, the best type of break is the one where you leave your 'working space', to establish a full distinction between your work and personal space. Sometimes it isn't always possible as you may have a busy day or be on a tight schedule, but when it's possible, it is highly recommended.

4. Communicate, Communicate, Communicate:

One of the most significant challenges Athena faced initially was the feeling of being isolated. She underscores the importance of regular communication. Whether it's a quick catch-up with a colleague or a scheduled team meeting, consistent communication bridges the gap of physical distance.

5. Set Clear Boundaries:

When your home is also your office, it’s easy for work hours to blur into personal time. Athena stresses the need to set clear working hours. Once the workday ends, shut off work notifications and truly unplug. This distinction ensures you recharge adequately for the next day.

Adapting to the Digital Nomad Life

Athena's journey from a traditional digital marketer to a remote-working maven during the challenging times of the pandemic is nothing short of inspiring. The initial switch was a leap into unfamiliar territory, but with the strategies mentioned above, she not only adapted but thrived.

The freedom of the digital nomad life can be both a blessing and a curse. The key is finding a balance. And as Athena has shown, with the right techniques, this lifestyle can be as fulfilling as it is flexible.
